Vandals Strike Sarasota County’s
Red Bug Slough Preserve

SARASOTA COUNTY, Florida [NMT] -- Vandals hit one of Sarasota’s most popular recreational areas over the weekend, spray painting obscenities on picnic tables, trash cans, an engraved interpretive sign and the lake’s concrete culverts. "In all, the damage probably comes close to or exceeds $2,000," said Weber, adding that neighbors and regular visitors to the area believe the vandals struck late Friday night after 8 p.m. or early Saturday morning. "Most of the tables and trash receptacles have been repainted, and we have been able to restore the interpretive sign. We hope we can remove the paint from the palm trunks without hurting the trees." He says the trickiest part may be cleaning the concrete culvert.

More than 400 snakes were captured around the Everglades National Park last year, WKMG News partner Florida Today reported. And, the climate in Brevard County would be agreeable for the snakes.

According to the university fact sheet, the Burmese python is one of the world's largest snake species.

The largest python found in the Everglades was 16 feet long and weighed 152 pounds.

"As soon as we know they're breeding, eradication gets to be out of the question," Mazzotti said of the snakes.

Most of the pythons were brought over as pets and then turned loose in the wild, WKMG said.
