Burglary of Unlocked Car
Leads to $2,000 Identity Theft;
Woman Arrested by Detectives

MANATEE COUNTY, Florida [NMT] -- A woman on felony probation was arrested on Wednesday, August 13, 2008, on a number of felony charges following the burglary of an automobile the previous Wednesday, August 6, 2008, and the subsequent use of credit cards and identification she stole from the vehicle.

Angela M. Murray

Angela M. Murray, 41, of 6230 47th Avenue East, Bradenton, was arrested on Friday, August 8, 2008, at Clancy's Bar, 6218 Cortez Road West, in Bradenton, after she couldn't explain the I.D. she was using there. The I.D., a Florida Driver's License, belonged to Cande Brugger, who lives in a residence directly behind Murray's listed address. At that time, following an investigation, Murray was arrested for Fraud (for using another's I.D.), and Violation of Probation.

According to Murray's arrest report, on August 6, 2008, Murray went to Brugger's address from Murray's mother's house (the house behind Brugger's), entered Brugger's unlocked vehicle and stole Brugger's driver's license, credit cards, a debit card, and several gift cards.

As Brugger explained later to NewsManatee, her daughter had been driving her mother's car earlier in the day, had come home and had failed to lock the car.

"At about 10:00 p.m. on Wednesday, I went to double check all the cars via remote to make sure they were locked, like I always do, but my car wouldn't beep from inside the house. I went outside to check it out and my driver's side door wasn't shut all the way. I didn't think anything of it; I just figured my daughter didn't shut it well. But then when I got home Thursday evening, my credit card companies started calling me."

Following Murray's initial arrest, Detectives Larry Tyre and Corey Griffin, of the Manatee County Sheriff's Office, began piecing together what would become a series of horrors to Cande Brugger.

Murray, it seems, had used Brugger's credit cards and Driver's License to rack up charges which, so far, amount to about $2,000 dollars, including a $200 dollar purchase of gift cards from the 7-Eleven convenience store at 4451 Tallevast Road, in Bradenton, which was captured on video, detectives say.

"In addition to having to deal with the fraudulent credit card charges, I've had to change banks now, too, because I had a book of my check carbons that she took also. Every single bill I pay is through that checking account," Brugger told NewsManatee. "It really is a hassle," she added.

Angela Murray has since been additionally charged in her August 13th arrest with Vehicle Burglary, Fraudulent Use of Another's Identification, False Representation of a Bank Customer, Felony Petit Theft (3rd offense), and Grand Theft Auto. The vehicle she used to get to Clancy's Bar belonged to another person. The vehicle has been returned to that person. More charges may follow, in the wake of mounting credit card charges by Murray on Brugger's credit cards.

Murray was convicted of Larceny in November of 2006 and again in June of 2007. She was also convicted of four counts of Uttering a Forged Instrument in September of 2007 and was sentenced to 2 years of probation.

Brugger's daughter has since been "counseled" about leaving cars unlocked.

[Ed. Note: Once again, we urge citizens not to leave valuables in your vehicles, and three more things...lock your car, lock your car, lock your car.]
