Man Wanted
Crack, Not Money
for Food, Tries to Shoot Other
Man, Rifle Jams; Arrested
MANATEE COUNTY, Florida [NMT] -- When Michael Blalock, 49, of 131 12th Street Court West, in Palmetto, gave a man a plate of food, he thought he would get crack cocaine in exchange. However, the recipient of the food gave Blalock money instead. That angered Blalock and he got a rifle to shoot the man, but it jammed on him, according to a report from the Manatee County Sheriff's Office.

Michael Blalock
According to the arrest report, on Monday, September 1, 2008, at about 1:30 a.m., Michael Blalock walked to a house nearby, which was the home of a man described only as "Handy" in the report.
Blalock was invited in and gave Handy a plate of food that he had received from a church.
About 15 minutes later, Blalock began to demand that Handy pay for the food he had been given. Handy refused to pay and Blalock left.
Several minutes later, Blalock returned with a .22 caliber rifle and said, "I'm gonna get my money." Blalock then began to put ammunition in the rifle.
Blalock then went to Handy's room in a shed behind the house and again demanded money. Handy gave Blalock $10 dollars to leave.
As Blalock walked back through the house he looked at both Handy and another man and said, "I'm gonna kill all you m*****f*****s." Blalock then tried to move the slide on the rifle, but was not able to. Blalock then left.
The Manatee County Sheriff's Office was called.
Blalock told deputies he did give Handy food in exchange for crack cocaine but Handy gave him ten dollars instead.
Blalock denied having a gun and said it was an umbrella.
However, deputies were able to locate one unspent round on the floor in Handy's home where they said Blalock was loading the rifle.
Additionally, a deputy located a .22 caliber rifle in Blalock's home that had similar ammunition in it. The ammunition inside the rifle appeared to be jammed with two rounds together, which explained Blalock's inability to move the slide on the rifle, the report said.
Blalock admitted he was in possession of the ammunition in Handy's home, but denied having the rifle there.
The report also said Blalock has four felony convictions in Florida ranging from drugs to probation violations.
Blalock was arrested and charged with Aggravated Assault with a Firearm and Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon.

Rising
Waters Mean Rising
Encounters with Animals, Snakes
MANATEE COUNTY, Florida [NMT] -- NewsManatee friend Jeff Norris, of Nuisance Wildlife Removal, Inc., reminds residents to prepare for the arrival of animals and snakes, in addition to storms.
With hurricane season at its prime and the recent storms in Florida, conflicts between humans and wildlife are on the rise. Normally, wildlife wants to stay as far away as possible from human contact unless they are being fed (direct contact), by development of natural areas or natural disasters (non-direct contact).
With some areas reporting as much as 30 inches of rain, snakes, alligators, rats, raccoons and squirrels are out looking for food and shelter. With high winds that also wreak havoc and cause soffits to be blown out, entry for wildlife into homes is much easier.
The good news is that when the waters recede and the weather is "normal," the animals will go back to their preferred ways. This means they will once again avoid contact with humans where possible. While we all love wildlife, that doesnt mean that we want them to take up residence in our homes.
Take a few minutes and to walk around your home or business and look for areas that may have been damaged by the recent winds or storms, or might be damaged by newly formed storms. Keep in mind that wind blowing as low as twenty miles per hour can knock a soffit loose that wasnt secured. And even if you dont see any signs of animal life now, if there are entry points such as loose soffits, the animals will move in this winter when they are looking for a safe, warm place to nest.
So, dont wait. Just like you prepare for hurricanes in other ways, why not make sure your home is prepared in a way that will prevent unwanted wildlife as well?

Surprised, Beaten by Friend
of Paraplegic Staying Over
CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Florida [NMT] -- Charlotte County Sheriffs Major Crimes detectives arrest two men following a Port Charlotte home invasion robbery on a paraplegic man this morning at 2:53 a.m. The suspects were very surprised that the handicapped man had a friend stay over, confronted the robbers and beat them severely, sending both to the hospital.
Above, L to R, Rick Benedict and Michael Moritz
MCU detectives said Charles Mathieu, 30, has muscular dystrophy and his friend Randy Morrison John, 31, was spending the night. John was asleep while Mathieu was out of his wheelchair sitting on his couch playing video games. A sliding glass door was smashed and two men entered, one had a gun later found to be a BB pistol. The gunman pushed Mathieu down on the couch and stuck the gun barrel in his face and told him not to move or make a noise, and then started ransacking his home. Mathieus friend, Randy came out of a bedroom, confronted and started beating on the two suspects. When deputies arrived, they found the home in total disarray, glass, furniture broken, lamps broken, curtains ripped down and blood all over the walls, floor, and outside the home. The two suspects were taken by EMS to Peace River Regional Medical Center and were identified as Michael Christian Moritz, 20, 27337 Neaptide Dr., Deep Creek, and juvenile Rick J. Benedict, 15, 27174 Sunnybrook Rd., Harbour Heights. Both were treated for multiple cuts and bruises, and released to detectives for questioning.
Benedict admitted he and Moritz went to the house to steal marijuana and cash after being told Mathieu kept cash in his couch and would be an easy hit. Moritz said he smashed the door in with a porcelain toilet tank top he brought from his home, and Benedict displayed the BB gun after gaining entry. Moritz said they were startled that someone else was in the house when this man came out of nowhere and punched him putting him in a daze. During the fight, Moritz lost his shoes, hat and handkerchief used as a mask which fell off in the kitchen. Both men fought long and hard with Randy John who also sustained multiple injuries; he was flown to Lee Memorial Hospital but released later this morning. Detectives contacted Animal Control to remove Randy Johns pit bull he had in his bedroom where he was staying as a guest. Mathieu received minor injuries from the flying glass when the pair broke in; he refused treatment.
Moritz and Benedict were both charged with Home Invasion Robbery with a Weapon and are being held on no bond.
Police: Evidence Indicates
Caylee Anthony, 2, is Dead
ORLANDO, Florida [NMT/WKMG] -- Preliminary evidence in the case of missing Caylee Anthony indicates that there was a dead body in the back of her mother's car and it was Caylee's body, Orlando television station WKMG reported Sunday.

Above, Caylee Anthony
"We have scientific evidence back from the lab -- the FBI lab -- and we have evidence that we have not yet made public that leads our investigators to believe that Caylee is deceased," Orange County sheriff's Cmdr. Matt Irwin said.
Not only did a car belonging to Casey Anthony smell like death but scientists were able to confirm the presence of gases produced by a decomposing body.
Investigators said the trunk also contained what they believe to be Caylee's hair and the hair showed signs of decomposition.
Detectives are still working to identify a stain in the trunk, WKMG has learned.
Despite the new evidence, authorities said that they are not ready to charge Casey Anthony with homicide, WKMG reported.
Caylee, 3, has been missing since mid-June.
Her mother, Casey, remains in the Orange County Jail on unrelated charges.

Deputies were dispatched at 10:45 a.m. to the store parking lot where Jennifer Ann Bennett, 35, 111 Avens Ave., Port Charlotte, said she was robbed by an unknown black male in the parking lot. Bennett was with her friend Jennifer J. Gebo, 29, of 27176 Punta Cabello Ct., Deep Creek, when the incident occurred.
Bennett told deputies she put her purse in a shopping cart when the man grabbed her purse but she refused to let go. She said the man pulled out a pocket knife, said hed kill her if she didnt let go of her purse. Bennett said she released it and the man fled toward Savon Furniture across the street.
