Manatee County Detective Busts
Father for Sexual Battery on
Daughter, 3; Mother Charged
with Child Abuse on Boy, 2

MANATEE COUNTY, Florida [NMT] -- Brett Daniel Shoemaker, 32, and Melissa D. Shoemaker, 37, both of Bradenton, have been arrested by the Manatee County Sheriff's Office.

Brett Daniel Shoemaker

According to the arrest report for Brett Shoemaker, on Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2008, a 3-year-old girl, her 6-year-old sister and their 2-year-old brother were all removed from their parents, the Shoemakers, and brought to the Child Protective Services offices to await placement.

While there, it was noticed that the 3-year-old girl was very dirty and had an unpleasant smell coming from her, so she was offered a shower. A CPS Specialist and a female acquaintance of the child's family observed the child being undressed to get in the shower. When the little girl's underwear was removed, the CPS worker and the other woman became alarmed because they saw blood on the little girl's panties and her vagina had signs of physical trauma. It was red and swollen.

A Manatee County Sheriff's Office female detective, Det. April Dugan, was called in.

The little girl was asked if someone had touched her and if someone had hurt her. She nodded yes, pointed to her vagina and started to cry. She eventually said, "Daddy do it at home." She drew a picture of her father and pointed out his private part and said her dad put it in her private part. She then drew several specks on the drawing which she later described as "white stuff" that came out of her dad's private part. She said her dad did it when her mom was not at home.

A doctor later confirmed that the little girl's vagina was red and swollen, but couldn't continue with the examination because it was too painful for her.

Two independent witnesses told Det. Dugan that prior to the children being removed, the children were staying with a family acquaintance and the child had had a bath but her genitals weren't red and swollen at the time.

The mother told the detective on the day her children were removed, her husband, Brett, was left at home with the little girl and their 2-year-old son.

Brett Shoemaker denied that he ever touched his daughter in a sexual manner; he said it must have been someone else or the redness must have come from the bath.

Brett Shoemaker was arrested on Wednesday, October 1, 2008, and charged with Sexual Battery on his 3-year--old daughter, a Capital Felony.

According to the arrest report for Melissa Shoemaker, during the removal process of the children on Sept. 30, it was brought to the attention of Det. Dugan that while Melissa was staying with the family acquaintance when they were moving during the last week of September, two people at that residence had observed the 2-year-old boy ask his mommy, Melissa, to look at him as he rode on a toy horse. After several times of the boy asking to be watched, Melissa stood up, took hold of his head with her hand and smacked his head against the wall "very hard," the report said the witnesses told Det. Dugan.

Melissa told the detective she had been on prescription pain medication and that she only tapped his head, but didn't remember the incident, due to the pain medication.

Melissa Shoemaker was arrested on Wednesday, October 1, 2008, and charged with Child Abuse.

High School Football Player
Dies After Contracting MRSA;
How to Prevent Such Infections

KISSIMMEE, Florida [NMT/WKMG] -- Orlando television station WKMG reported an 18-year-old Central Florida high school football player died from methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, also known as MRSA, according to health officials.

Alonzo Smith, who attended Kissimmee Liberty High School, died early Monday morning after going to the hospital Friday morning because of back spasms, school officials said. He was treated and released but returned to the hospital Sunday morning.

Death from MRSA is rare, Osceola County Health Department officials said.

MRSA is a type of staph infection that is resistant to antibiotics called beta-lactams. Beta-lactam antibiotics include methicillin and other more common antibiotics such as penicillin, amoxicillin and oxacillin.

Staphylococcus aureus, often referred to simply as "staph," are bacteria commonly carried on the skin or in the nose of healthy people. Sometimes, staph can cause an infection. Staph bacteria are one of the most common causes of skin infections in the United States.

Factors that have been associated with the spread of staph infections, including MRSA skin infections, include close skin-to-skin contact, openings in the skin, such as cuts or abrasions, contaminated items and surfaces, crowded living conditions and poor hygiene.

Most of the skin infections are minor, such as pimples and boils and can be red, swollen, painful, or have pus or other drainage. It can be treated without antibiotics.

However, staph bacteria also can cause serious infections, such as surgical wound infections, bloodstream infections, and pneumonia.

The Florida Department of Health recommends the practice of good hygiene to prevent staph or MRSA infections:

~ Keep hands clean by washing thoroughly with soap and water or using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
~ Keep cuts and scrapes clean and covered with a bandage until healed.
~ Avoid contact with other people's wounds or bandages.
~ Do not pop boils. This should only be done by a doctor.
~ Avoid sharing personal items, such as towels or razors.

Under arrest is Stephen Paul Grant, 59, of 702 51st Street East, Bradenton. He is charged with Attempted Premeditated Murder and Armed Robbery. Those charges may be upgraded if the woman who was shot dies.

Grant is a former assistant manager of Crispers. He quit on July 26, 2008.

Surveillance video captured his image and employees recognized him, according to a NewsManatee confidential source.

Deputy Police Chief J.J. Lewis reported on Sunday, September 28, 2008, at 9:25 a.m. Bradenton Police Officers responded to a robbery that occurred at Crispers Restaurant, 6412 Cortez Road.

Investigation revealed that the female manager was robbed after arriving to open the business in the early morning hours.

The manager, Alyssa Whitson, 39, was shot during the robbery. Grant apparently took her into a closet, where he shot her. That's where she was found, unconscious and bleeding, and the door was locked, according to a police report. A NewsManatee confidential source said she was shot execution-style. Police will not confirm that, but instead referred us to the police report language of their findings, "bleeding from the head, back and unable to communicate."

Whitson was transported to Bayfront Medical Center for treatment of her injuries. Doctors say she will likely succumb to her injuries. They were unable to operate on her head wound, because a bullet had fragmented inside her skull.

According to Dep. Chief Lewis, Whitson remains hospitalized in critical condition. She is on life support, sources say.

The restaurant was closed on Monday and there was a staff meeting in progress during the afternoon hours. The front door was being closely guarded, according to Heather Chadwick, NewManatee volunteer reporter/photographer. It was open for business on Tuesday.

Murder Possibly Prevented
When Woman Runs from
Man with a Gun, Threats

MANATEE COUNTY, Florida [NMT] -- A woman who was the girlfriend of John S. Patterson, 44, of Wauchula, Florida, possibly escaped death on Thursday, Sept. 25, 2008, when Patterson, who she lived with, walked her into the woods at I-75 and Moccasin Wallow Road; Patterson had a gun. In fact, a deputy would later discover he had three guns, including a shotgun with a pistol grip -- all three were loaded and had rounds in the chambers.

John S. Patterson

According to Patterson's arrest report from the Manatee County Sheriff's Office, the woman told deputies that Patterson picked her up outside her work in Clearwater at about 12:30 a.m. on Thursday. She thought they were going to try to work on their relationship.

However, once she got into Patterson's car, Patterson started driving erratically. When she asked to be let out, he refused.

The woman said Patterson kept flashing a pistol that was in a holster on his hip. He kept asking her to tell the truth about seeing other men. When she told him that she was, he began to hit her on the head and arm. She also said at that point he removed his gun from the holster and had it sitting on his lap.

When they got to a spot on I-75 near Moccasin Wallow Road, Patterson stopped the car. Once stopped, Patterson began telling her that all the girls who worked the streets would disappear just like this in the woods and would never be found. Then Patterson told her that they were going to take a walk in the woods, and that this is what would happen to her.

The woman became fearful for her life and pleaded with Patterson to let her go. Patterson kept trying to persuade her to go into the woods for a walk. The woman said Patterson kept going to the trunk of his car like he was going to get something.

The woman said she then pretended to go with him into the woods. As they started into the woods, the woman ran from Patterson and kept running until she came out on the Interstate. She was able to flag down a passing Florida Highway Patrol Trooper.

While she was telling the Trooper what happened, she saw Patterson drive by and point him out to the Trooper. The Trooper mad an investigatory stop on Patterson's vehicle and called the sheriff's office to respond.

When Deputy Tony Begley arrived on scene, he found the woman was very shaken, crying and emotionally upset. He was unable to see any injuries on the woman from being battered but she had scratches on her feet. The woman said the scratches were from running through the woods. She refused EMS treatment.

Patterson had told the Trooper he had a gun in his glove box and in the trunk.

Dep. Begley found the pistol and secured it. Then he searched the trunk. Inside the trunk, he found another pistol and a shotgun with a pistol grip. All three firearms were loaded and had a round in the chamber. Dep. Begley also found the holster on Patterson's hip that belonged to the handgun in the trunk. There was also a box of bullets in the shotgun case. Dep. Begley also found a film canister in the trunk with marijuana inside and a pipe that was consistent in nature for smoking marijuana.

Patterson was arrested at about 2:40 a.m. on Thursday and charged with Aggravated Domestic Assault with a Firearm, Domestic Battery, Possession of Marijuana, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. He was transported to the Manatee County Jail, where he was being held on a bond of $64,240 dollars.

Patterson bonded out of jail on Saturday, Sept. 27, 2008. His arraignment is set for October 31, 2008.
