for Theft, Assault, Child
Neglect at Bealls Store
BRADENTON, Florida [NMT] -- The Bradenton Police Department has arrested Adrian C. Conde, 25, of 1907 5th Street West, Bradenton, after Conde allegedly stole two pairs of shoes from the Bealls Department Store located at 6355 Manatee Avenue West, Bradenton.

Adrian C. Conde
According to an arrest report from BPD, on Tuesday, March 17, 2009, at about 12:30 p.m., Conde entered the store and selected two different pairs of shoes. He took the shoes out of the boxes and concealed them in a diaper bag belonging to his 1 1/2 year-old son, who was with Conde at the time.
Then Conde walked out of the store, passing all points of purchase, without paying for the two pairs of shoes.
Loss prevention stopped him outside the store.
At that point, Conde picked up his son and held onto him as he argued with the loss prevention person.
The loss prevention person told Conde to put his child down and come back inside the store and Conde refused. The L.P. person placed his hands on Conde's shoulder and Conde pushed him back and started walking toward his ride.
Loss prevention and Conde then started wrestling, with the child still in Conde's arms.
Conde made his way to his ride and gave his son to a friend. He then started swinging his fists at the loss prevention person and struck the L.P. person in the chest.
Conde was taken to the ground shortly afterward and detained.
BPD arrived a short time later and arrested Conde.
He told the BPD officer that he had nobody to watch his son, which is why the boy was with him. He said he stole the shoes because he needed to pay his rent and feed his family.
The shoes were valued at $127.79. Conde said he was going to sell them on the street for half price.
Conde was charged with Child Neglect, Retail Theft, Resisting a Retail Merchant and Assault.
Despite needing to steal the shoes to pay rent and buy food, Conde somehow made his $10,240 bail and was bonded out of jail.

First-Grade Teacher
Charged With '88 Murder
ORLANDO, Florida [NMT/WKMG] -- An Orange County teacher has been arrested and charged with the 1988 murder of her husband, Orlando television station WKMG reported.
Delores Laster's husband, Clarence Laster, was found dead in the couple's Orlando home in March 1988.
Delores Laster, now 61, told investigators she had returned home from a trip to Gainesville to find her husband dead in the garage. She said someone broke into the house and killed him.
Detectives did not find any evidence of forced entry at the home, and they also reported discrepancies in family testimony, but Delores Laster was not charged at the time.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement reviewed the case beginning in mid-2008 and was able to verify significant inconsistencies in the suspect's story. Investigators said they were able to finally crack the cold-case by interviewing Lasters' children, who were in the home at the time of the shooting.
A grand jury indicted Laster on Tuesday and the Orange County Sheriff's Office arrested her later that day. She was charged with first-degree murder with a firearm. She has been an Orange County public schools employee for 40 years and was a first grade teacher at Dillard Street Elementary up until Tuesday, WKMG said.

Five Anna Maria Elementary
Students Suspended for
Alleged Drug Sales
ANNA MARIA, Florida [NMT/The Islander] -- The pre-expulsion hearings for five Anna Maria Elementary school fifth-graders suspended for making illegal drug deals at school are complete, resulting in alternative placement for all in lieu of expulsion.
The five fifth-graders faced a hearing committee, including Manatee County School District personnel, after AME principal Tom Levengood issued a 10-day suspension for each student involved in negotiating the sale and purchase of drugs on campus.
Due to the nature of the offense, the five students may not to return to AME or transfer to another elementary school, such as Palma Sola Elementary, per the district criteria in the student code of conduct handbook.
The pre-expulsion committee was tasked with reviewing each students involvement individually, school history, and taking input from Levengood and parents before deciding on one of two consequences -- expulsion from all district schools or placement in an alternative school. In all five cases, students were placed in alternative school environments.
The districts alternative school is Horizons, however, options also include home school, private school, charter school and virtual schooling with district approval.
Levengood confirmed that one student opted for private school, one for charter school, one for home school and one will attend Horizons. The fifth students choice is unknown.
Students will attend alternative schools for a specific length of time determined by the expulsion committee. Levengood said the time period varies for each student, and each student will undergo a re-evaluation prior to being permitted back into the public school system.
