Drowns in Bathtub When
Young Mother Leaves Him
Alone in Tub
MANATEE COUNTY, Florida [NMT] -- An 11-month-old boy, Ryan Walter Gerken, drowned in a foot of water in a bathtub when his mother left him alone in the tub, according to information in a report released by Detective Todd Sellitto, of the Manatee County Sheriff's Office. The incident occurred on Sunday, May 31st and the boy died on Wednesday, June 3rd.

The report said on Sunday, May 31, 2009, Jessica Barnes, 19, of 3606 19th Street West, Bradenton, called 911 with concerns that her son had drowned in the bathtub.
Jessica had placed her now deceased 11-month-old baby in the bathtub located in the bathroom of the above address. Once the child was in the tub, Jessica used a plastic saucer type drain plug to create a suction to enable the bathtub to fill with water.
Jessica later explained that she did check the temperature prior to leaving the room to locate the child's clothing and a towel.
At this point, Jessica left her child unattended for an extended period of time estimated to be between 5-10 minutes based on statements, medical opinion, and testing of the tub water levels.
Jessica admits that she may have lost track of time and became concerned when she didn`t hear her son playing and splashing.
When Jessica entered the bathroom she found her son face down submerged in the tub with what she originally stated was about a foot of water.
Jessica removed the child, unplugged the tub and tried to give her child CPR. She called 911 and EMS responded.
Based on the totality of information it is clear that Jessica was negligent and failed to provide adequate supervision resulting in the death of the 11-month old-child, Det. Sellitto wrote in his report of the incident.
The investigation was forwarded to the State Attorney's Office for review.
Charges are pending.
[Ed. Note: NEVER, NEVER, NEVER leave a baby or infant child alone in a bathtub, not even for 5 seconds, which is all it takes for a child to drown, or at least inhale water and choke desperately for air, which may not be available if the child is submerged in the water.]

Ball then told the boy to go to his room. But the boy instead called his father a name. Ball pushed the boy and grabbed him by his neck and pushed him into a wall, the report said.
The boy left the house to cool off and returned later.
When the boy returned, Ball started to argue with Deborah again. Again the boy tried to intervene, but Ball grabbed him by his face and they started to wrestle.

Ball was arrested and charged with Child Abuse and Domestic Battery.
He remains in the Manatee County Jail on a bail bond of $2,000.

Pinnacle Urgent Care Centers
Install Automated Prescription
Drug Dispensers
BRADENTON, Florida [NMT] -- On Monday, June 1, 2009, Pinnacle Urgent Care Centers, providing quality care for unexpected injuries and illnesses, announced it has begun offering InstyMeds, a fully automated ATM-style machine that dispenses prescription medications directly to patients immediately before leaving the office. The system, the first of its kind in Florida, offers a safe, convenient way for patients to receive their prescription medications.
This new system allows patients to have their prescriptions filled and take their first dose of antibiotics before they leave, says Shelley Anglin, LPN, Urgent Care Clinical Coordinator. InstyMeds helps them get back on the road to recovery as soon as possible.
The InstyMeds system automates the entire process from the prescriber issuing the prescription, to the patient obtaining their medications, and payment collection. The patient can obtain their medications and be on their way in about the same time it takes them to use their bank ATM.
The added convenience will help ensure patients fill and take their prescribed medications leading to faster recovery, says Dr. Joseph Soler, Medical Director at Pinnacle Urgent Care. Patients in a hurry or unable to get to a pharmacy will no longer face difficult obstacles in getting prescriptions filled.
How it works. The medical provider enters a prescription electronically and gives patients a voucher with a unique security code. Using the touch-screen of the InstyMeds dispenser, the patient enters the unique security code and their date of birth. The patient then swipes a debit or credit card or inserts cash to pay for the prescription or insurance co-payment. After the machine performs a triple bar code safety check, the pre-packaged, labeled product is dispensed from the machine to the patient. The entire process typically takes a couple of minutes.
Patient Compliance: Studies show that between 20 and 30 percent of prescriptions that doctors write go unfilled. The added convenience of the InstyMeds system increases the likelihood that the patient will fill their prescription and undergo the medication treatment plan.
Pinnacle Urgent Care Centers, staffed by respected and longtime community physicians, provide quality care for unexpected injuries and illnesses. The Urgent Care Centers are unique in that they allow immediate access to not only urgent care services but state of the art diagnostic testing and laboratory services. One of the juveniles opened the front door and observed two unknown Hispanic males driving northbound in an older model baby blue in color Lincoln town car yelling "South Side."
Then, when the other juvenile went to the window, a small white late 90s model Chevrolet pickup truck with two unknown Hispanic males in it drove up into the driveway and fired two or three shots at the residence. The truck then fled southbound; the occupants were yelling "South Side."
Monaca Rodriguez-Valdez, the juveniles' mother, who rents the residence, arrived home right after the incident and advised that she observed the same type vehicle to be leaving the area.
No one was injured and the area was searched with negative results.
However, a 9mm bullet casing was found outside of the residence.

4 RVs Broken Into, Multiple
Items Taken, Including Gun
MANATEE COUNTY, Florida [NMT] -- The Manatee County Sheriff's Office reported 4 Star Storage, located at 3106 81st Court East, Bradenton, was burglarized. The burglary was reported at about 2:45 on Thursday, May 28, 2009.
According to the report, sometime between May 14, 2009, and May 26, 2009, unknown person(s) entered the 4 Star Storage area and broke into several RVs.
Entry methods made to the RV's were both forced and unforced, the report said.
Items stolen were GPS units, flat screen TVs, a satellite receiver, in-dash stereos, currency, household items, and a .25 cal semi-automatic pistol.
According to the property owner, Bruce Schackelford, the security camera system was knocked out recently during one of the thunderstorms that occurred over the past week. He advised he will contact the camera company and see if they can retrieve the video of the lot to determine if the crimes occurred before the camera went out.
It was later discovered that the fence on the west side of the storage lot had been cut and there was an opening that could have been the initial entry point.
