FHP Announced Results of
Holiday Enforcement
TALLAHASSEE, Florida [NMT] -- On Wednesday, July 8, 2009, Col. John Czernis, director of the Florida Highway Patrol, announced the preliminary results of the recently completed statewide traffic enforcement initiative, Operation CARE (Combined Accident Reduction Effort), which FHP conducted during the 72-hour period on July 3 - 5, 2009. During the period, the Patrol focused on violations for speed, failure to buckle up, and Driving Under the Influence in an effort to minimize the number of crashes and fatalities on interstate highways during holiday weekend.
Initial reports indicate that Operation CARE resulted in 4,548 speeding citations, 1,928 safety belt-related offenses, and 98 DUIs arrests. In addition, troopers assisted 2,443 motorists.
While the operation successfully targeted enforcement action on drivers who put themselves and other motorists at risk, FHP reported 19 fatalities and 66 alcohol-related crashes during the holiday period.
In Troop F which consists of the southwest region of the state, troopers investigated 17 crashes one of which was fatal and two were alcohol related. Troopers issued 80 speeding citations, 13 seatbelt citations and assisted 108 motorists.
All available troopers participated in the heightened enforcement effort, to include Auxiliary and Reserve troopers. They used RADAR, LASER, motorcycles, marked and unmarked vehicles, and aircraft to identify violators. The Patrol also used DUI checkpoints and roving teams to remove drunk drivers from the streets.
In addition to mobilizing in full force, FHP worked with local law enforcement agencies across the state to address traffic enforcement priorities. Checkpoints are often multi-agency operations, where the Patrol works with city and county officers to make the roadways a safer place to drive.
During Operation CARE, troopers statewide maximized our visibility and enforcement activity to safeguard the motoring public, said Czernis. These initiatives are part of our ongoing education and enforcement efforts that have helped us reduce Floridas 2008 traffic-related fatality rate to the lowest the state has ever reported.

Detectives Awarded Deputy
of the Month for June 2009
MANATEE COUNTY, Florida [NMT] -- Manatee County Sheriff Brad Steube has announced two detectives have been awarded Deputy of the Month for June 2009.
For years, Manatee County Sheriff's Detective Randal Barnett and Detective Derek Pollock have worked parcel interdiction cases with the K-9s to intercept packages containing narcotics. In April 2009, they attended a training session on parcel handling and interdiction, with emphasis on working out-bound parcel interdiction as well as incoming due to money transactions.
Immediately upon returning from training, they initiated contact with various pack and ship locations in the county to educate store owners and implement a program to interdict illicit drug proceeds. Within one hour, Detective Barnett and Detective Pollock were summoned to a store and took possession of a parcel containing $19,000. The next day, they were summoned to another store where the K-9 responded, a search warrant was obtained, and a parcel was intercepted containing $18,500 in money orders. Two weeks later, they were called on, resulting in K-9 hits, search warrants and large amounts of money found in two parcels. The next week, they made a connection to the money order shipment and intercepted a parcel containing fourteen pounds of marijuana.
During the period of a month, Detective Barnett and Detective Pollock seized in excess of $75,000, tied to illicit drug trafficking across the county and in other states, and their work has helped other agencies to further their investigations. They have applied their training and experience in a proactive and aggressive manner against the criminal element, for which Detective Randal Barnett and Detective Derek Pollock are awarded Deputy of the Month for June 2009.
Sheriff Brad Steube congratulates both detectives.

Arrests Man for Cyber
Sex Crime

Adam Nelson Norsell
Adam Nelson Norsell, 24, of Punta Gorda, made plans to meet the child for a sexual encounter but was apprehended by members of the Attorney General's Tampa CyberCrime Task Force.

If convicted, he faces up to 20 years in prison, and additional charges could follow.
The Attorney Generals Tampa CyberCrime Task Force involves partnership of law enforcement agencies working together to prevent the sexual solicitation and exploitation of children.
