When Morton was asked how he got to the pawn shop, he indicated that he rode there with Rivers in a blue Dodge Neon, parked outside.

Governor Crist Calls for Immediate
Action to Control Burmese Pythons
In Everglades
TALLAHASSEE, Florida [NMT] -- In response to the increase of Burmese pythons in the Everglades ecosystem, Governor Charlie Crist requested Chairman Rodney Barreto and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) take immediate action to stop the spread of pythons onto state lands.

Above, a Florida FWC Officer with a Burmese python
It is important that we take action now to ensure a safe and healthy future for Floridas native wildlife and habitats in the Everglades, said Governor Crist.
We appreciate the Governors attention to this matter, and will act with diligence to remove this harmful species from impacted state lands, said FWC Chairman Rodney Barreto.
In response to the Governors direction, the FWC, in partnership with the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) and in consultation with its federal partners in the Everglades National Park and Big Cypress National Preserve, will implement a permitting program that could ultimately lead to a bounty system for controlling this invasive, exotic species. The FWC will begin issuing permits on July 17. Initially, this program will focus control efforts on state lands lying south of Lake Okeechobee, including FWC-managed lands and SFWMD property.
This permitting program will be carried out by a limited number of qualified herpetology experts who are willing to volunteer their time and efforts. Burmese pythons captured under the permit will be euthanized when they are captured.
Permit-holders will collect basic data (location, approximate size, weight, and stomach contents) on the captured species. Data collected will help the FWC and its partners develop better methods of controlling exotic species. The program will extend through the fall and winter months, at which point it will be reviewed for its effectiveness.
FWC Chairman Barreto noted that to achieve full success in controlling Burmese pythons, these types of efforts will need to be ultimately expanded onto federally-managed lands in the Everglades.
We hope this program also will demonstrate that a bounty system utilizing volunteer efforts and capitalizing on the value of the meat and hides from pythons can provide a cost effective solution that can be readily applied in places where Burmese pythons have the strongest foothold including Everglades National Park, Barreto said.
Over the years, the FWC has made it a priority to work with owners of exotic pets. The FWC annually hosts pet amnesty days around the state. These events allow owners of exotic pets to turn in their animals for free, no questions asked. In addition, state law requires that all pets that are Reptiles of Concern be licensed by the FWC. The license costs $100 per year and mandates specific caging requirements. Burmese pythons more than two inches in diameter must be implanted with a microchip that identifies the animal. It is unlawful to release them or allow them to escape them into the wild.

Daring Daylight Armed
Home Invasion Robbery
MANATEE COUNTY, Florida [NMT] -- The Manatee County Sheriff's Office reported an armed home invasion robbery in the 2600 block of 8th Avenue East, in Palmetto, on Tuesday, July 14, 2009, at about 7:15 a.m.

The report said the victim, Pedro Garcia, 46, was asleep in his bedroom when he heard the front door getting kicked in. He attempted to hold the bedroom door closed, but two Black males armed with handguns pushed it open and confronted him with the guns.
They ordered him to the ground, where one of the men placed the gun to Garcia's temple and pulled the trigger three times, but no projectile was ejected. The victim thinks that it may have been a BB gun because the trigger pull sounded light. The suspect then hit him over the head with the weapon, leaving a small abrasion and bump on his head. He refused EMS and it did not seek any further medical attention.
Meanwhile, they kept asking, "Where is the money, where is the coca (meaning cocaine)."
They tied Garcia's hands and feet with duct tape, an apron and wire, and ripped the phone out of the wall.
The suspects ransacked the entire house, going through every drawer and closet, including ripping open a large bag of flour in the garage.
According to the victim, they spent about 45 minutes in the house before they fled. He heard a car driving off, but could not give any description or travel direction.
He ran to a neighbor across the street after he freed himself to call for help.
The victim resides in the home with his wife, son, daughter in law and their two children. He stated his son left for Atlanta on Friday and works in construction. His wife and daughter-in-law left for work before 6:30 that morning and took the children to a day care. He generally would be at work also, but he is off for the summer season.
The suspects took between $800 to $1000, an unknown amount of jewelry and possibly a 9mm chrome Colt handgun. Crime scene was still processing the residence and the victim and his wife were waiting for them to clear to make a detailed list. A detective responded along with a Victim advocate.
The area was checked with help from a K-9 unit, but a track could not be established. A neighborhood canvass was conducted, but no witnesses were located.
Garcia told deputies he did not know the suspects or why they chose his residence.
The invaders were described as 2 unknown Black males, approx. 5'5" tall, 180 pounds, both wearing black T-shirts, long jeans shorts, black ski masks, and each was armed with black semi-automatic hand guns.
