Jose Gomez-Hernandez

According to the report, both the victim, Ramon Gomez-Rico, 51, the father, and the suspect, Jose Gomez-Hernandez, 23, the son, were arguing over some financial issues.

Pictured above, L to R, BPD Officer Ben Pieper,
Doug Bieniek - Investigator/Major Crimes with the
State Attorney's Office, and BPD Officer Lixa Arostegui

The task force selected the City’s Gang Unit from the 49 law enforcement agencies that comprise its multi-agency gang task force. Officers Lixa Arostegui and Ben Pieper, the primary investigators of the City’s gang unit, accepted the award during the Florida Gang Investigator’s Conference in Orlando last week.

“I hope the citizens of Bradenton are as exuberant as I am about the BPD’s Gang Unit being named Number 1 of the 49 agencies in the Tampa Bay Multi-Agency Task Force," Mayor Wayne Poston said. “As Mayor and Police Commissioner, I want to both salute and applaud the Bradenton Police Department Gang Unit for living up to our motto of ‘Professionalism Through Continuous Improvement.’”

Doug Bieniek, Major Crimes Investigator for the State Attorney's Office, said BPD’s Gang Unit has become an intricate part of the multi-agency task force by responding to callouts and hosting several successful callouts in Bradenton. He also commended Bradenton’s Fire Department and Code Enforcement; they also respond to callouts.

Bradenton Police Chief Michael Radzilowski described a “callout” as a request for assistance from a law enforcement agency in the Tampa Bay region when gang activity may be involved. Incidents requiring a callout can range from a gang-related shooting to a request for additional officers at a county-wide fair.

“I’ve been in this business a long time and even I’m impressed with those two because of the amount of information they know about each and every gang member and their families, what they drive, their habits, where they hang out,” Chief Radzilowski said.

In addition to Officers Arostegui and Pieper, the City’s gang unit has a sergeant and six other officers prepared to assist Officers Arostegui and Pieper if the need arises.

Public safety is a top priority in the City of Bradenton. According to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, the crime rate in the City of Bradenton dropped 7.4% in 2004, 9.9% in 2005, 3.2% in 2006, 1.4% in 2007 and 5.1% in 2008 – and is poised to decline again this year with a 10.8-percent drop during the first six months.

The City of Bradenton Police Department is accredited by the State of Florida.

This Week's Stupid Criminal:
Man Tries to Rob Woman
While Deputy Watches

MANATEE COUNTY, Florida [NMT] -- A Manatee County Sheriff's Deputy had just pulled into the Shell gas station at 53rd Avenue and 14th Street West, in Bradenton, when he witnessed a man attempting to rob a woman in broad daylight -- 10:30 a.m. -- on Monday, August 17, 2009.

Gregory S. McPherson

The arrest report said Dep. Mireles entered the gas station from the north entrance on 53rd Avenue West. As he proceeded slowly, he observed a man later identified as Gregory S. McPherson, 53, a homeless man, walking in a fast pace toward the gas pumps where the victim, a 62-year-old woman, was pumping as into her vehicle. Her back was to McPherson.

McPherson rushed toward her and quickly tried to place his arms around her, grabbing her by the right hip as she spun away from him. It was an attempt to overpower her, Dep. Mireles wrote in the arrest report.

McPherson then reached into the woman's RIGHT pocket, in an attempt to take her personal belongings from her pocket. What McPherson didn't realize was that the woman had placed the credit card in her LEFT pocket after she scanned it at the pump to pay for her gas.

The woman was surprised at McPherson's actions and tripped over the gas hose as she tried to get away from McPherson.

At that point, Dep. Mireles exited his patrol cruiser, took hold of McPherson, and immediately secured him with handcuffs.

Unseen by McPherson: the woman's purse and keys to her vehicle were on the driver's seat, in plain sight.

McPherson was arrested and charged with Strong Arm Robbery.

He remains in the Manatee County Jail on a bail bond of $50,000.

Man Tries to Use Stolen
Credit Cards: Busted!

MANATEE COUNTY, Florida [NMT] -- The Manatee County Sheriff's Office has arrested Jason Ryan Lewis, 24, of 4524 60th Street Court West, Bradenton.

Jason Ryan Lewis

The arrest report from Dep. Paul Escher said on Monday, August 17, 2009, Lewis entered the 7-11 convenience store at 4208 59th Street West, in Bradenton.

Lewis tried to purchase a carton of cigarettes, a lighter and a Visa gift card in the amount of $100. The entire transaction would have totaled $165.

However, the store clerk told him he couldn't purchase the items without proper I.D. When Lewis tried to change the order to reflect a pack of cigarettes, rather than a carton, the clerk said he couldn't purchase the gift card on a debit card. But Lewis didn't have the PIN number for the debit card. So he told the clerk he didn't want the gift card.

Instead, he only tried to purchase the cigarettes and lighter. He tried using one credit card, but it was declined. He then gave the store clerk a second credit card and was approved.

He stayed in the store for another 30 minutes, asking the clerk what he could purchase without I.D.

The clerk became suspicious and called police. When Dep. Escher arrived, a second clerk pointed out Lewis.

Dep. Escher interviewed Lewis, who said he didn't have any ID, but did have credit cards and pulled them out and handed them to Dep. Escher. Lewis then told the deputy they were his girlfriend's father's credit cards and that the girlfriend's dad had given them to her to use at the store, but his girlfriend had just gotten arrested for shoplifting at Wal-Mart and he was heading home to give the cards back to her father.

Another deputy went to the home of the girlfriend's father, who said the credit cards had been taken out of his wallet, without permission.

Lewis was arrested and charged with Credit Card Theft and Fraudulent Use of a Credit Card.

Incident to his arrest, Lewis was searched and Dep. Escher found Lewis' I.D. tucked into the side of Lewis' sneaker.

As of Tuesday, Lewis remained in the Manatee County Jail on a bail bond of $2,000.

City, Police Union Agree to
Contract Without Raises

BRADENTON, Florida [NMT] -- The union that represents the officers of the Bradenton Police Department has agreed with the City on a one-year contract extension – with no increase in salary, Bradenton Public Information Officer Tim McCann reported Friday, August 14, 2009.

The new contract begins Oct. 1 and expires Sept. 30, 2010.

Police Chief Michael Radzilowski said police officers came to the negotiating table without asking for a raise because they knew the sluggish economy had already taken its toll on taxpayers.

"It certainly shows that the officers are not here for the money, but to make a legitimate difference in keeping the City safe and financially sound," Chief Radzilowski said.

The Florida Police Benevolent Association represents the department’s 100 police officers and sergeants. Sgt. Brian Thiers, the department’s union representative, said negotiations went with relatively ease.

"The union understands the financial impact the City has undertaken this past year," he said.

UPDATE: 5-Year-Old Girl, Shot In
Stomach, ID's Mom's Boyfriend
As Shooter

ORLANDO, Florida [NMT/WKMG] -- A 5-year-old girl who was shot in the stomach told police her mother's boyfriend shot her, Orlando television station WKMG reported.

Jazyire Sims, 5, was shot in her Orlando apartment on Aug. 4.

Her mother, Arkeisha Perez, told investigators the gun was fired accidentally by her 4-year-old son while she was in another room.

Police said they agree the shooting was an accident, but that Somelle Calixte, Perez's boyfriend, was handling the gun.

Police said Jazyire picked Calixte out of a photo lineup and identified him as the shooter.

Police said Calixte lived with Perez and her children.

Calixte, 27, was arrested Thursday afternoon on charges of aggravated abuse, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, culpable negligence and improper display of a weapon or firearm. He bonded out of the Orange County Jail Friday morning.

At the time of the shooting, Perez, 26, was charged with aggravated child abuse, culpable negligence and failure to safely store a firearm. She was released on bond last week.

Police said Perez went to the police station on Thursday to request cash that was collected at her apartment the night of the shooting. Officers had also collected marijuana from her apartment the night of the shooting, and she was re-arrested and charged with possession of marijuana with intent to sell.

Police said Perez appeared to be more concerned about the money than her child.

Jazyire was placed in foster care and Perez's other children are in the custody of family members.
