Known Prostitute Arrested
After Kicking Cop in Groin;
Drugs, Paraphernalia Found

BRADENTON, Florida [NMT] -- Bradenton Police have arrested Carol E. Crosby, 54, of the 100 block of 26th Street West, Palmetto, following a traffic stop.

Carol E. Crosby

According to the arrest report, on Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2009, at about 11:30 p.m., a Bradenton Police Officer observed Crosby make a rolling stop through a stop sign located at the intersection of 9th Avenue East and 27th Street East. The officer initiated a traffic stop.

He discovered Crosby did not have a valid driver license.

After obtaining consent to search her vehicle, he asked Crosby to step out of the vehicle and observed her shoving an unknown substance in her mouth, trying to conceal it. Once out of the vehicle, the officer had Crosby open her mouth and observed a large amount of a white powder substance in her mouth, which she immediately swallowed.

She was then placed in custody. Prior to placing her in the patrol car, he conducted an external pat down on her front pockets with the back of his hand. He felt a large bulge in Crosby's left front pocket. The item was removed and was a large wad of tissue balled up with several unknown white pills wrapped on the inside. The pills were later identified as Ativan, which is usually prescribed for anxiety; however, Crosby did not have a prescription for the drug, the report said.

While being escorted to the officer's cruiser, Crosby became hostile and combative. While attempting to place her in the cruiser, Crosby kicked backward with her right foot, striking the officer in his groin area. After kicking the officer, Crosby continued to be combative. He placed her in the cruiser on her stomach, due to her attempting to spit on the officer.

Once inside the vehicle, Crosby continued to kick the door and scream. After several minutes of Crosby remaining calm, he removed her to place her in an upright position. A glass pipe fell out from under Crosby's body onto the ground. The pipe tested positive for cocaine.

After searching the interior of the vehicle and Crosby's purse, the officer found a red pipe that resembled a small flashlight and a makeshift push rod. They tested positive for cocaine.

Crosby was charged with Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer, Possession of a Controlled Substance, 3 counts of Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and Resisting Arrest with Violence.

She remains in the Manatee County Jail on a bail bond of $10,480.

According to Manatee County court records, Crosby has been arrested several times in Manatee County for Prostitution. She was also arrested this past August for Possession of Illegal Drugs and Introduction of Illegal Contraband into a Corrections Facility.

Man, 25, Arrested for
Sex Crime Against
Little Girl, 3

MANATEE COUNTY, Florida [NMT] -- The Manatee County Sheriff's Office has arrested Lorne A. Yearego, 25, of the 400 block of North Briggs Avenue, Sarasota.

Lorne A. Yearego

The arrest report said Yearego was previously arrested on August 29, 2009, and charged with Domestic Battery and Child Abuse.

The day after his arrest, the unnamed 3-year-old girl disclosed to her mother that "daddy Lorne touched my cooter and it hurt."

The mother, wishing to clarify her daughter's statement, said, "You mean when he wipes your bottom?" The little girl responded, "No, because he likes it."

The mother then called the Child Protective Services investigator with whom she had been working on the prior charges. The CPS investigator then notified the sheriff's office.

In an interview, the child repeated her claim word for word twice more.

A medical examination revealed Yearego had touched her vagina. When the doctor asked her if she had been touched there, the child said, "Yes, inside."

During an interview with Yearego on Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2009, Yearego denied the incident and alternately asked for a lie detector and a lawyer, but couldn't make up his mind which he wanted, then asked if he could call his mother.

He finally said he wanted a polygraph and one was given. The results are not known at this time.

However, Yearego was arrested and additionally charged with Capital Sexual Battery, according to the arrest report. The jail website says he was charged with Custodian Fondled a Victim Under 12.

Whichever charge is sustained, he remains in the Manatee County Jail without bond.

Columbia grabbed the microphone from Laura and Laura threatened to hit him. Columbia said Laura did not hit him, but did push him in the chest.

Laura then became verbally abusive toward the other nurses, calling them [expletive deleted] bitches.

Laura was not questioned due to the fact that she was under the influence of a narcotic. However, she was medically cleared from the hospital and taken to the Manatee County Jail.

They told Condon that he was going to come with them and that a bondsman was going to be picking Condon up. They also suspected Condon of stealing some tools earlier in the week and that they wanted them back.

Condon attempted to leave the bar when Jimerson hit Condon three times in the face and side of the head, the report said.

Condon was able to get out the front door of the bar, but Jimerson caught up to him on the sidewalk and took Condon to the ground, where Jimerson punched Condon again in the face and kicked him in the side.

Sarasota County: Protect Yourself
From Pneumonia Caused by Flu

SARASOTA COUNTY, Florida [NMT] -- Although the flu is a mild illness for most, some people -- especially those with chronic health conditions -- may develop pneumonia. Many of those who have been critically ill with the H1N1 (swine) flu also have developed pneumonia, a potentially life-threatening illness.

There are vaccines available to prevent some forms of influenza and pneumonia. “The pneumonia vaccine will not keep you from getting the flu. But it is a proactive measure to protect against the serious and sometimes deadly complications resulting from any respiratory flu,” said William Heymann, M.D., F.A.C.E.P., medical director for the Sarasota County Health Department.

Although people 65 years of age and older should get a pneumonia shot, those 2-64 years old are also at high risk for complications from pneumonia brought on by flu. People who should consider getting a pneumonia vaccine include:

~ All adults 65 years of age and older;

~ Any adult 19-64 years of age who smokes, has asthma or some other chronic respiratory complication;

~ Anyone 2-64 years of age who has a disease or condition that lowers the body’s resistance to infection, such as Hodgkin’s disease; lymphoma or leukemia; kidney failure; multiple myeloma, nephritic syndrome; HIV or AIDS, damaged spleen; or organ transplant;

~ Anyone 2-64 years of age who is taking a drug treatment that lowers the body’s resistance to infection, such as: long-term steroids, certain cancer drugs or radiation therapy;

~ For children 2-18 years of age, parents should consult the child’s healthcare provider to determine if the pneumonia vaccine is right for their child. Also, pneumonia vaccine in children requires a doctor’s prescription.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), if you have had a pneumonia shot before the age of 65, you will only need one additional pneumonia shot after the age of 65 for lifetime immunity. Health officials say that there should be a minimum of five years between the two shots.

The cost of the adult pneumonia vaccine at the Sarasota County Health Department is $52. Cash, check and credit cards are accepted. If you have Medicare Part B as your primary insurance, the department will bill Medicare; however, other forms of insurance will not be billed. There is no charge for children to receive the vaccine through the federally funded Vaccines for Children Program. A prescription is not required for children who meet the high risk criteria.

Now is the time to start thinking about protecting you and your family from all types of influenza and pneumonia. Contact your healthcare provider or the Sarasota County Health Department for more information at 941-861-2900. You also can visit www.sarasotahealth.org or call the Sarasota County Health Department’s Flu Information Line, 941-861-2800.

Commercial Vehicles Subject
To Brake Inspection During
FDOT's Brake Safety Week

TALLAHASSEE, FLORIDA - Colonel David Dees, Director of the Florida Department of Transportation’s Office of Motor Carrier Compliance (OMCC) announces participation in Brake Safety Week, which will take place Sunday, September 13, through Saturday, September 19.

During Brake Safety Week OMCC Officers will conduct commercial vehicle inspections with an added emphasis on brake components and provide educational materials to drivers. Inspection decals (valid for 90 days) will be placed on all vehicles that have no major violations discovered.

Brake Safety Week is part of the Operation Air Brake Campaign, an ongoing effort throughout North America dedicated to improving inspection, compliance, maintenance, and performance of commercial vehicle brake systems. Operation Air Brake is sponsored by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance, North America’s leading commercial vehicle safety enforcement organization.

Braking systems on commercial vehicles have many complicated parts requiring constant inspection to ensure proper operation. Poorly adjusted air brakes and brake system defects are a major cause of commercial vehicles being placed out of service. These air brake issues can reduce the braking capacity for large vehicles and further increase their stopping distance. This increases the risk to motorists and to the driver of the commercial vehicle when conditions require an immediate brake application.

Manatee Leaders Urge Parents:
"Avert Another Tragedy; Get
Involved with Your Children"

MANATEE COUNTY, Florida [NMT] -- State and local leaders and Manatee County’s top law enforcement and school officials today urged parents to participate in their children’s lives, even if it means invading their privacy.

(Photo by Heather Chadwick, NewsManatee)

During a press conference to discuss the recent violence that has rocked the community, Manatee County Commission Chair Dr. Gwendolyn Brown was joined by State Rep. Darryl Rouson, Manatee County Sheriff Brad Steube, Superintendent Tim McGonegal and county and school board members in a plea to local parents for greater involvement in their kids’ lives.

“Pay attention to your child,” Brown said. “Love them enough to talk to them about where they are, who their friends are and where they’re going.” Later she added, “I want the community to be outraged enough to do something, outraged enough to say, ‘Enough is enough.’”

Bayshore High School cheerleader Jazmine Thompson, 17, was shot and killed Friday near Southeast High School after a football game. It was the second Bayshore High School-related shooting in a month. On Aug. 4 Bayshore graduate Dejuan Williams was shot and killed in his backyard after chasing off young men who were with his sister.

Brown offered condolences to both families, and said she’s saddened and angry about the “very disturbing” and “heartbreaking” events. She said the responsibility of turning the violent cycle rests within every parent, not in the school system or law enforcement.

Rep. Rouson offered Manatee leaders $4,000 to combat the problem from a pool raised for back-to-school materials for children in his district.

Sheriff Steube said he’s tired of parents not being involved in their children’s lives and that he wants the community to take a stand. He urged parents to take an active role in their children’s lives, and those of their children’s friends’ lives. He also pressed anyone who knows anything about guns in or near schools to make an anonymous call to Manatee County Crime Stoppers at 1-866-634-8477.

Concerned community members may also call Manatee County Community Services at (941) 749-3030 or click on Community Services under the Departments tab at www.mymanatee.org

“It’s time to storm the beach,” said School Board member Barbara Harvey. “To parents: one of the top things you do should be raising your children. You won’t be perfect, but you’ll give it your best … Love them enough to inspect their rooms and book bags. Parents have to step up to the plate.”

A follow-up community discussion is slated for Sept. 19, though a time and venue have not been decided.

The press conference will be re-broadcast several times over the coming week on MGA-TV, Bright House channel 622, Verizon channel 30 and Comcast channel 20. It will air:

~ Tuesday, Sept. 8 at 5 and 8 p.m.

While Deputy Goode conducted her investigation, Clinton Stacey, 21, approached and began getting too close to her person. Deputy Goode told Stacy to back up several times before he complied. Stacy sat down near the car in the ditch with a few other subjects who were in the vehicle after providing Deputy Goode with a false name.

Deputy Goode was still conducting her investigation and trying to determine who was driving the vehicle when Stacy stood up and walked off. Deputy Goode escorted Stacy back to the scene where he became combative and started swinging his arms. Stacy struck Deputy Goode in the shoulder and pushed her in the chest before fleeing from the scene.

A short time later Deputy Petta located Stacy at the 2700 block of 1st Street East. Deputy Petta was able to apply one handcuff but Stacy became combative.

Detective Parham arrived to assist and warned Stacy several times to comply with his commands to stop resisting arrest. After Stacy sat down he refused to move his legs inside the car and began kicking at Deputy Wagner. Stacy kicked Deputy Wagner in the arm and chest before he was moved into the vehicle. Stacy then began to bang his head against the window in the patrol car. Stacy was warned to stop the action but refused. A short burst of pepper spray was applied to the face of Stacy to prevent him from harming himself and damaging MCSO property.

Stacy immediately complied and was taken to Manatee Memorial Hospital to be checked out, as he appeared to be under the influence of narcotics.

In May, the ECC received accreditation in Emergency Medical Dispatch from IAED. Manatee County’s ECC becomes the second Florida center to achieve the accreditation. Only 10 others in North America have the dual accreditation.

Both accreditations were the result of rigorous compliance in areas such as quality assurance, standardized training and both internal and external customer service.

“The strong relationship between the County’s 911 Dispatch Center and the Fire Chiefs Association has resulted in an accreditation that will improve the quality, efficiency and ultimately the safety and well being of our community,” Leinhauser said.
