FDLE: Prescription Drugs Account
For Nearly 80% of All Drug Deaths
In 1st Half of 2009
TALLAHASSEE, Florida [NMT] -- On Tuesday, Nov. 24, 2009, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) released the Florida Medical Examiners Commission Report on Drugs Identified in Deceased Persons. The report contains information compiled from autopsies performed by medical examiners across the state from January through June 2009. During that period there were approximately 88,500 deaths in Florida. Of those, 4,199 individuals were found to have died with one or more of the drugs specified in this report in their bodies.
The report indicates the four most frequently occurring drugs found in decedents were Ethyl Alcohol (1,963), all Benzodiazepines (1,651), Oxycodone (890) and Cocaine (724). The drugs that caused the most deaths were Oxycodone, all Benzodiazepines (with Alprazolam accounting for the majority of the deaths), Methadone, Ethyl Alcohol, Cocaine, and Morphine.
The four drugs where more than 50 percent of the deaths were caused by the drug when the drug was found, were Heroin (86.9 percent), Methadone (73.4 percent), Fentanyl (56.4 percent), and Oxycodone (56.1 percent).
With Heroin continuing to be the most lethal drug named in this report, occurrences increased by 22 percent and deaths caused by Heroin also increased by 20.5 percent over the last half of 2008.
The report also indicates that prescription drugs continued to be found more often than illicit drugs in both lethal and non-lethal levels during the first part of this year. Prescription drugs account for 79 percent of all drug occurrences in this report when Ethyl Alcohol is excluded.
It is evident in this report that the abuse of prescription drugs continue to be a lethal problem in our state, said FDLE Commissioner Gerald Bailey. FDLE continues to work with our criminal justice partners to prevent the unfortunate and unnecessary deaths caused by these drugs.
The medical examiners report continues to document the lethal consequences of the diversion, abuse, and mixing of prescription painkillers and sedatives, said Director of the Office of Drug Control Bruce Grant. The implementation of the Prescription Drug Monitoring Program is underway, but reducing prescription drug diversion and abuse will require a comprehensive approach and immediate action to shut down the pill mills that are fueling addictions and overdoses.
Medical Examiners specifically collected information on these drugs: Ethyl Alcohol, Amphetamines, Methamphetamines, MDMA (Ecstasy), MDA, MDEA, Alprazolam, Diazepam, Flunitrazepam (Rohypnol), other Benzodiazepines, Cannabinoids (Marijuana), Carisoprodol/Meprobamate, Cocaine, GHB, Inhalants, Ketamine, Fentanyl, Heroin, Hydrocodone, Hydromorphone, Meperidine, Methadone, Morphine, Oxycodone, Propoxyphene, Tramadol, and Phencyclidine (PCP). Medical Examiners also began tracking Buprenorphine, Oxymorphone, and Zolpidem in January 2009.
The Florida Medical Examiners Commission 2009 Interim Report of Drugs Identified in Deceased Persons is available on the FDLE Web site at www.fdle.state.fl.us
2.1 Million Cribs Recalled After
Four Infant Deaths Reported
WASHINGTON, D.C. [NMT/CPSC] -- The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), in cooperation with Stork Craft Manufacturing Inc., of British Columbia, Canada, today announced the voluntary recall of more than 2.1 million Stork Craft drop-side cribs, including about 147,000 Stork Craft drop-side cribs with the Fisher-Price logo. The recall involves approximately 1,213,000 units distributed in the United States and 968,000 units distributed in Canada.
CPSC urges parents and caregivers to immediately stop using the recalled cribs, wait for the free repair kit, and do not attempt to fix the cribs without the kit. They should find an alternative, safe sleeping environment for their baby. Consumers should contact Stork Craft to receive a free repair kit that converts the drop-side on these cribs to a fixed side.
The cribs drop-side plastic hardware can break, deform, or parts can become missing. In addition, the drop-side can be installed upside-down, which can result in broken or disengaged plastic parts. All of these problems can cause the drop-side to detach in one or more corners. When the drop-side detaches, it creates space between the drop-side and the crib mattress. The bodies of infants and toddlers can become entrapped in the space which can lead to suffocation. Complete detachment of drop-sides can lead to falls from the crib.
CPSC, Health Canada, and Stork Craft are aware of 110 incidents of drop-side detachment; 67 incidents occurred in the United States and 43 in Canada. The incidents include 15 entrapments; 12 in the U.S. and three in Canada. Four of the entrapments resulted in suffocation: a 7-month-old in Gouverneur, N.Y.; a 7-month-old in New Iberia, La.; a 6-month-old in Summersville, W.Va.; and a 9-month-old in Bronx, N.Y. Included in these incidents are 20 falls from cribs; 12 in the U.S. and eight in Canada. Fall injuries ranged from concussion to bumps and bruises. The cribs involved in these incidents had plastic drop-side hardware that had broken, missing, or deformed claws, connectors, tracks, or flexible tab stops; loose or missing metal spring clips; stripped screws; and/or drop-sides installed upside-down.
This recall involves Stork Craft drop-side cribs and Stork Craft drop-side cribs with the Fisher-Price logo. This recall does not involve any cribs that do not have a drop-side. This recall does not involve any cribs with metal rod drop-side hardware. It involves only those cribs with plastic trigger and one-hand-system drop-side hardware.
This recall includes Stork Craft cribs with manufacturing and distribution dates between January 1993 and October 2009. This recall also includes Stork Craft cribs with the Fisher-Price logo that have manufacturing dates between October 1997 and December 2004. The Stork Craft cribs with the Fisher-Price logo were first sold in the U.S. in July 1998 and in Canada in September 1998. The cribs were sold in various styles and finishes. The manufacture date, model number, crib name, country of origin, and the firms name, address, and contact information are located on the assembly instruction sheet attached to the mattress support board. The firms insignia storkcraft baby or storkling is inscribed on the drop-side teething rail of some cribs. In Stork Craft cribs that contain the Fisher-Price logo, this logo can be found on the cribs teething rail, in the manufacturers instructions, on the assembly instruction sheet attached to the mattress support board, and on the end panels of the Twinkle-Twinkle and Crystal crib models.
Major retailers in the United States and Canada sold the recalled cribs including BJs Wholesale Club, J.C. Penney, Kmart, Meijer, Sears, USA Baby, and Wal-Mart stores and online at Amazon.com, Babiesrus.com, Costco.com, Target.com, and Walmart.com from January 1993 through October 2009 for between $100 and $400.
The cribs were manufactured in Canada, China and Indonesia.
For additional information, contact Stork Craft toll-free at (877) 274-0277 anytime to order the free repair kit, or log on to www.storkcraft.com/.
[Ed. Note: Although this is a nationwide alert from CPSC in Washington, we thought it advisable to add it to the local news page, in case someone here bought one of the cribs.]

Palmetto Police Ask Public's Help
In Solving Two Violent Crimes
PALMETTO, Florida [NMT] -- The Palmetto Police Department needs the publics help in solving two serious, violent crimes that occurred last November. Extensive investigations have yielded some evidence in both cases, but investigators are sure that there are people in the community that have the additional information necessary to help close these cases.

According to Lt. Scott Tyler, last year, on November 4th at about 5:30 p.m., two Black males entered the Bulls Eye Shooting Range at 1012 10th Street East. The men were dressed in dark-colored clothing and one was armed with a handgun. The men robbed the business, taking handguns and other items. The victim cooperated with the robbers, but, in an act of unprovoked violence, one of the robbers shot the victim at close range. Miraculously, he survived his injuries.
Then last year, on Thanksgiving eve at about 8:30 p.m., 36-year-old Miguel Hernandez-Gomez was murdered. The crime occurred in a parking lot in the 700 Block of 9th Street West. According to witnesses, the victim was approached by two Black males dressed in dark-colored clothing. The men were in a light-colored or white sedan. The men got out of the car and confronted the victim. A struggle ensued and a gunshot was heard. The victim was then seen collapsing to the ground. The men got back into their car and fled the area. Miguel Hernandez-Gomez died in the parking lot from the gunshot wound.
During both of these violent crimes, the perpetrators showed no regard for the life of their victim.

FHP Increases Enforcement for
Thanksgiving Travel Period
TALLAHASSEE, Florida [NMT] -- The Thanksgiving holiday is a peak travel period for families nationwide. Florida is no exception. With its mild, autumn temperatures and numerous vacation attractions, many families enjoy spending their holiday in the Sunshine State. Since Thanksgiving typically produces a high volume of motor vehicle traffic, the Florida Highway Patrol will increase its presence on Nov. 25 - 29. All sworn FHP personnel, including those typically assigned to administrative duties, will patrol Floridas high volume roadways during the five-day period. Auxiliary and Reserve troopers will volunteer to augment the Patrol.
Troopers will direct their enforcement efforts toward impaired driving, speeding, following too closely and other aggressive driving behavior. In addition, troopers will strictly enforce safety belt and child restraint laws, which now authorize law enforcement officers to stop motorists who fail to buckle up.
"The Florida Highway Patrol is committed to making Floridas highways safe, and we plan to do that by bolstering our forces to reduce the number and severity of crashes," said FHP Director, Colonel John Czernis. "I encourage motorists to do their part by complying with all traffic laws and making sure everyone in their vehicle is buckled up.
The Florida Highway Patrol offers safety tips to help you and your family arrive at your destination safely:
~ Get plenty
of rest before setting out on a long trip
~ Observe and obey all speed limits
~ Allow plenty of time to reach your destinations
~ Drive sober, and only sober
~ Buckle up!
Eliminate distractions: Texting, talking on the phone, eating, adjusting the stereo these are all examples of things that can take your eyes off the road, which is exactly what you want to avoid.
Prepare your vehicle: Check fluids for proper levels, i.e. oil, gas and windshield wipers, and ensure your tires have adequate pressure and are in good condition.
The Florida Highway Patrol wishes everyone a safe and happy Thanksgiving and reminds motorists of Floridas Move Over Law. The law requires drivers who approach an emergency vehicle or tow truck stopped roadside with flashing lights to change lanes away from the emergency vehicles if able to do so safely and if not, slowdown to 20 mph below the speed limit.
Call *FHP (*347) to report intoxicated or aggressive drivers, or if your vehicle breaks down and you need assistance.
To request immediate emergency services, dial 911.

The Foundation for this program started in 1985 by a number of Eastern Airline Flight Attendants.
Today, the Manatee County Sheriffs Office, Sarasota/Bradenton Airport Fire Department, local businesses and volunteers from several agencies assist in this event.
Members of the Colony Cove community association provide each child with a stuffed bear and the Shrine Clowns entertain them with balloons and typical clown antics. A local private school chorus provides seasonal songs to cheer the children and their families while awaiting the arrival of Santa Claus. McDonald's graciously provides Happy Meals for the children and their families.
Inside the Fire Station is a Santas workshop where the children can sit with Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus and tell them of their wish list and receive their gift bags. Also, the children will get a photo of themselves with Mr. and Mrs. Claus, including a video or a DVD of the whole days event with the help of Santas elves.
This is a memorable event not only for the children but also for their families and everyone involved.
If you would like to contribute your donations of any kind, it would be greatly appreciated.
