Cop
Investigates Fondling
Complaint; Arrests Man for
Possession of Marijuana
MANATEE COUNTY, Florida [NMT] -- If you ever walk down the street and have the urge to fondle yourself in public, just don't be carrying marijuana. That's what happened to James Patrick Walsh, 22, of 5819 24th Street Court West, Bradenton.

James Patrick Walsh
An arrest report from the Manatee County Sheriff's Office said on Tuesday, July 12, 2011, a deputy was dispatched to the 2900 block of Cortez Road West, regarding a White male with gray shorts and no T-shirt walking westbound on Cortez Road fondling himself.
The deputy initially couldn't find the described person, but a little further to the west found Walsh walking toward the Shell gas station at 3612 Cortez Road West.
The deputy pulled his vehicle toward the front of the Shell store and yelled to Walsh to come towards him.
Walsh turned around and looked straight at the deputy and continued to walk inside the store, disobeying the command.
Walsh entered the store and turned around again. The deputy made hand gestures for him to walk outside so he could investigate why he was touching himself in public. Walsh walked outside and the deputy immediately detected that he was nervous, since he was shaking "pretty severely."
Deputy Alan Resnick told Walsh why he was there and asked if he had anything on him that the deputy needed to know about.
Then the deputy asked if Walsh minded if the deputy searched his pockets, to which Walsh replied, "I prefer you not search my pockets." Then Walsh spontaneously said, "I have weed in my pocket that I found back there, pointing towards 14th Street West."
Walsh said he wanted to be truthful about finding the marijuana and was hoping to find an officer to turn it over to.
Deputy Resnick searched Walsh's pocket and pulled out a baggy containing 11 small bags of marijuana.
Walsh was arrested and charged with Possession of Marijuana under 20 grams.
On the way to jail, Walsh said "This is [screwed up] that I am going to jail when all I did was find this."
However, when Walsh was searched, the deputy found a silver lighter which had a green "marijuana leaf" on the front.
Walsh's bond on an earlier charge of Possession of a Stolen Credit Card was revoked.
Walsh remains in the Manatee County Jail without bond at this time.

Over 1 Million Sign Petition
for "Caylee's Law"
MANATEE COUNTY, Florida [NMT] -- NewsManatee is running an article on the Opinion page, called "Justice for Caylee" which also urges readers to sign a petition for "Caylee's Law." A link to the petition is at the bottom of that page.

Caylee Marie Anthony
August 9, 2005 circa June 16, 2008
"Caylee's Law" -- as proposed -- would make it a felony for a parent or guardian to fail to report a missing child within 24 hours; it also proposes that it would be a felony to fail to report a dead child within an hour.
It all came about when, one week ago, Casey Anthony's acquittal frustrated Americans who felt justice had not been served. One woman from Oklahoma turned that frustration into action on Change.org.
She started a petition and shared it with her friends, who shared it with their friends, and so on.
Now we see the results: 1.19 million people have signed the petition for Caylee's Law.
CNN, ABC, and hundreds of other news outlets have covered the campaign.
And 29 states have now proposed "Caylee's Law" legislation.
The results above for the petition were announced by Change.org.

Three Robbed of Drugs at
Gunpoint by Two White Males
MANATEE COUNTY, Florida [NMT] -- The Manatee County Sheriff's Office reported an armed robbery on Wednesday, July 13, 2011, at about 4:30 p.m., at the old Leverocks restaurant location, 5317 19th Street East, Ellenton.
A sheriff's report said Ruth Booa, 41, of Bradenton, was going to give her friend Kimberly Wilson, 47, of Bradenton, a ride to her doctors appointment in Tampa. However Ruths car was leaking oil, so Ruth had her friend Mike Gamzuzza, 41, of Ellenton, drive them to Tampa.
On the way back, Mike was constantly on his cell phone with text messages and phone calls. Mike stopped at several conveyances stores to make private calls while he had Kimberly and Ruth stay in his truck.
When Mike drove off of I-75 onto US 301 North, Mike stated that his truck was flooding and was going to break down so he pulled off the road into the wooded parking lot at the old closed down Leverocks restaurant to attempt to fix the truck.
At that time, two White males jumped out of the woods armed with black semi-automatic handguns, pointed the guns at them and demanded their money.
One of the robbers, who had brown hair, suspect pushed Kimberly down onto the ground. They took Kimberlys purse that contained $100 in cash, a visa debit card, a bottle of 1 mg Clonazepam that had 30 pills in it and a bottle of 130 count 30 mg Oxycodone that she just had filled.
Ruth refused to give up her purse that contained her medications and tossed her cell phone to them, stating that is all she has.
Mike gave them his wallet that contained $470 in cash, a food stamp card, a social security card, a prepaid credit card and a truck key.
The suspects then fled into the woods.
Mike had the only cell phone and did not call 911.
Mike and Ruth were not upset; however, Kimberly was very upset and advised that she had to stop someone driving by to call 911.
A perimeter was set up and a K-9 unit tracked towards a dock along the water. A marine unit responded and searched the area with negative results. The Violent Crimes Task Force (VCTF) responded, took over the investigation and had a crime scene technician process the vehicle. The technician lifted several prints that filled nine print cards.
The robbers were described as two unknown White males in their 20's; one had brown eyes and long shaggy brown hair, was 5'-7" tall, 175 pounds, and was last seen wearing a dark shirt and shorts. The other had medium length blond hair, was 5'-8" tall, weighed 130 pounds, and was last seen wearing a black shirt and blue jean shorts. Both were armed with black semi-automatic hand guns.

Florida Statute Allows Man
To Get Away With Bigamy
ORLANDO, Florida [NMT/WKMG] -- A Florida man has two wives, two families and two marriage certificates, but under Florida's current bigamy law, the state cannot do a thing about it, Orlando television station WKMG reported.
Tait "Tater" Michael Bennett was arrested and booked on bigamy charges last October after his wife, Heather Marie Bennett, discovered he had married another woman in Las Vegas.
Heather Bennnet said her husband, "Swore it never even happened," but Clark County, Nev., records confirmed a marriage certificate was issued to Michael T. Bennett and Amy Bessey on Nov. 4, 2005.
Tait Bennet lives in Central Florida and has a child with Amy Bennett.
Heather Bennett said she never knew about the secret wedding until she went to the Department of Children and Families seeking child support for their two children. They separated after she said she discovered her husband was cheating on her.
A records check found another Mrs. Tait Bennett. Much to her surprise, her husband has been married to another woman for six years.
The Department of Motor Vehicles conducted an investigation and found that Amy Bessey Bennett was legally married to Tait Bennett.
Heather Bennett filed charges against her husband, but on June 28, 2011, Assistant State Attorney John N. Knutton sent her a stunning decision.
"Unfortunately, Florida case law and statute says that the second marriage must take place in Florida," Knutton wrote.
Heather and Tait Bennett were married in Fort Pierce, Fla., in 2000.
She said it feels like the law is allowing her husband to laugh at her and the system.
"It's like almost getting away with murder, because he's murdered my life," Heather Bennett said.
Under Florida statute 826.01, anyone "having a husband or wife living (and) marries another person" is guilty of a 3rd-degree felony.
Attorney Steven Lockhart, a former state legislative researcher, said Bennett has violated "the spirit of the law."
Lockhart said a simple adjustment in the language would ensure that Florida would not be a haven for bigamists.
The Florida state attorney sent a complete file of the case to Clark County District Attorney David Roger, WKMG said.

Burglars Turn Off Power
While Victims Sleep
ORLANDO, Florida [NMT/WKMG] -- Orlando police are investigating three burglaries that occurred within the last week, Orlando television station WKMG reported.
Police said in all three cases, the burglars targeted homes with breaker boxes on outside walls and tripped the switches to turn off the power.
Orlando police said the thieves' goal was likely to disable alarm systems.
In two of the cases, police said the residents were inside sleeping.
The latest case happened near Lake Underhill around midnight Saturday. Police said a 58-year-old woman was asleep inside while thieves burglarized her home. Police wouldn't say what they took, but they said the woman's alarm never went off because she didn't have a backup power supply.
Two other homes were targeted last Wednesday near Silver Star and Pine Hills Road.
In one case, no one was home, but at the other house, a mother and her 7-month-old child were sleeping, according to police.
Orlando police said homeowners should check with their alarm company to make sure there's a backup power battery supply and power boxes should be locked if outside.
Police said they are investigating and have not determined if the three incidents are related, WKMG said.

Dixon brought Bill into the back area and introduced him to A.L. and her friend. Then Dixon went into a private room and gave Bill his "usual," which was determined to be a "hand job."
At the completion of Bill's "usual," Dixon returned to A.L. and said that Bill offered to give her $200 for a "hand job."

The incident was later disclosed to the parents of A.L. and reported to law enforcement.
On March 11, 2011, a controlled phone call was placed to Dixon by A.L., who told Dixon she needed money. She was also charged with two counts each for Sale and Delivery of Oxycodone, two counts of Possession of Oxycodone, and one count for Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.

Anthony Verdict Spurs
Talk Of 'Caylee's Law'
ORLANDO, Florida [NMT/WKMG] -- An Internet movement to change the law in the hours after Casey Anthony was cleared of murdering her daughter has gone viral and is being supported by the masses disappointed by the verdict, Orlando television station WKMG reported.
"Caylee's Law" would make it a felony for parents or caregivers to not report the death of a child to authorities -- accidental or otherwise -- within one hour. It also would make it a felony for guardians to not notify law enforcement of the disappearance of a child within 24 hours, WKMG news partner Florida Today reported.
Michelle Crowder, of Oklahoma, started the online petition to create the law hours after the verdict was announced.
"When I saw that Casey Anthony had been found not guilty in the murder of little Caylee, and that she was only being convicted of lying to the police about her disappearance, I was sickened," Crowder said through a news release. "I could not believe she was not being charged with child neglect or endangerment, or even obstruction of justice."
In a verdict that made headlines internationally, 25-year-old Casey Anthony was found not guilty of murdering her 2-year-old daughter, Caylee, and not guilty of child abuse. She was convicted of four misdemeanors of lying to police as they investigated her daughter's disappearance. Casey Anthony waited 30 days before reporting her daughter missing.
At least one Florida lawmaker is supporting the notion.
State Rep. Bill Hager, R-Boca Raton, announced Wednesday afternoon that he's currently drafting legislation consistent with the Internet movement. Hager is on the Justice Committee. The earliest he might be able to introduce the bill is during the next legislative session that starts in March, WKMG said.
Governor, A/G Announce
More Than 100K Narcotic
Pills Were Surrendered
During Strike Force
Operation
TALLAHASSEE, Florida [NMT] -- On Wednesday, June 6, 2011, Governor Rick Scott and Attorney General Pam Bondi announced that more than 105,000 [narcotic] pills were surrendered at 24 locations during a statewide compliance operation conducted by the Department of Health, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, and five of Floridas Regional Drug Enforcement Strike Forces. The inspections were conducted pursuant to the Department of Healths declaration of public health emergency made on July 1st.
In March 2011, Governor Scott announced a Statewide Drug Strike Force, headed by FDLE Commissioner Gerald Bailey, to combat the criminal distribution of prescription drugs in Florida. With support from Attorney General Pam Bondi and state and local law enforcement leaders, the Strike Force is charged with stopping the flow of dangerous drugs into communities by disrupting the major illegal supply points.
Earlier this year, I made a promise to crack down on pill mills and stomp this scourge out of our state. The results were seeing this week show were making good on that promise, said Governor Rick Scott. I thank the law enforcement and public health professionals who are making our multi-faceted approach a success and a model for the nation. By shutting down pill mills, we are saving lives and making our communities safer places to live.
One of the most effective ways to stop prescription drug abuse is to cut it off at the source, stated Attorney General Pam Bondi. It was gratifying to accompany the Broward County Sheriffs Office and the South Florida Strike Force and see them quarantine prescription narcotics and prevent the easy access that had long exacerbated this epidemic.
The number of pills surrendered or returned to the distributor in each region is as follows:
~ Miami Regional Operation Center: 48,406.5 pills
~ Orlando Regional Operation Center: 52,322 pills
~ Tampa Bay Regional Operation Center: 4,698 pills
~ Fort Myers Regional Operation Center: 153 pills
~ Pensacola Regional Operation Center: None
