Third National Prescription
Drug Take-Back Event
Nets 188.5 Tons

WASHINGTON, D.C. [NMT/DEA] – Americans participating in the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration’s (DEA’s) third National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day on October 29 turned in more than 377,086 pounds (188.5 tons) of unwanted or expired medications for safe and proper disposal at the 5,327 take-back sites that were available in all 50 states and U.S. territories.

When the results of the three Take Back Days to date are combined, the DEA and its state, local, and tribal law-enforcement and community partners have removed 995,185 pounds (498.5 tons) of medication from circulation in the past 13 months.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, enough prescription painkillers were prescribed in 2010 to medicate every American adult around-the-clock for one month.

Often, some of these medicines languish in the home and are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are alarmingly high -- more Americans currently abuse prescription drugs than the number of those using cocaine, hallucinogens, heroin, and inhalants combined, according to the 2010 National Survey on Drug Use and Health.

Studies show that the majority of teens who abuse prescription drugs obtain them from family and friends for free, including from the home medicine cabinet. Many Americans simply do not know how to properly dispose of their unused or expired medicine, often flushing it down the toilet or throwing it away. These methods can pose both safety and environmental hazards.

Four days after DEA’s first Take-Back Day event September 25, 2010, Congress passed legislation amending the Controlled Substances Act to allow the DEA to develop a permanent process for people to safely and conveniently dispose of their prescription drugs. After President Obama signed the Safe and Secure Drug Disposal Act of 2010 on October 12, DEA immediately began developing regulations for a more permanent solution.

Operation Spiderweb: 50 Busted
in Sex Predator Sting

ORLANDO, Florida [NMT/WKMG] -- The Orange County Sheriff's Office says its sex predator sting dubbed Operation Spiderweb netted 50 arrests, Orlando television station WKMG reported.

The Sheriff's Office said it intentionally conducted the sting operation around Halloween to show how man dangerous people are preying on kids and to warn those looking for sex with kids that they could be meeting with an undercover officer, instead.

Deputies shot video of a stream of men showing up at a home is west Orange County over the weekend, thinking they were there to have sex with a child, investigators said.

Undercover detectives posing as children, or, in some cases, the parents of children, chatted with the man online first, often on popular social networking sites.

Once the men walked through the front door of the home, a team of deputies would quickly take them to the ground and arrest them.

Authorities said many would-be child molestors are aggressive online, letting their victim know quickly what they want, but others slowly set the trap for the children over a period of several days or weeks -- preying on the children's insecurities and desire to be liked.

Not all of the arrests were of men. Deputies said one woman, Ashley Gonzalez, 19, also showed up at the home anticipating sex with a child.

Detectives also nabbed an Orange County youth pastor, a fire department lieutenant, a doctor, a federal prison corrections officer and two theme park workers, WKMG said.

Time Change: Time to Change
Smoke Alarm Batteries

SARASOTA COUNTY, Florida [NMT] -- The end of Daylight Saving Time at 2 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 6, brings the reminder to change batteries on home smoke alarms.

About 70 percent of home fire deaths are from fires where there is no smoke alarm or no working smoke alarm. Smoke alarms can save lives – but only when they’re working. A properly installed and maintained smoke alarm will warn household members and give them a chance to escape.

Fire Marshal Richard Fulwider gives these safety tips to help save lives:

~ Install smoke alarms on every level of your home. For extra safety, install smoke alarms inside and outside sleeping areas, especially if you sleep with your bedroom door closed.

~ Replace the batteries in your smoke alarm when you change your clocks for the time change. Mark Nov. 6 on your calendar.

~ Keep smoke alarms clean. Dust can interfere with alarm smoke detection. Regularly vacuum over the smoke alarm.

~ Replace the battery promptly. The “chirping” noise could mean the battery is low.

~ Replace smoke alarms about every 10 years. They wear out. Write the purchase date with a marker on the back of the smoke alarm so you know when to replace it.

If you can’t afford a smoke alarm, the Sarasota County Fire Prevention Office can provide one for you. This program is available to keep you safe.

1 of 4 Teens Arrested in
"Egging" Incident

CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Florida [NMT] -- Charlotte County Sheriff's deputies continue their investigation into a Halloween “egging” situation that got out of hand in the Deep Creek area Monday night, October 31, 2011.

Quentin Griffin

CCSO received a call at 10 p.m. of an incident that started on Encarnacion Street near Seasons Drive when a maroon Ford Taurus approached and threw an object out of the window at the victim’s oncoming Ford truck. The object struck the victim’s truck, caused several dents, broke a light and shattered the windshield.

The victim made a U-turn and followed the fleeing car for several minutes. Near the intersection of Deep Creek Blvd. and Chiclayo Avenue, a pickup pulled out in front of the Taurus and was struck. The victim’s truck then smashed into the rear of the Taurus. All of the four occupants in the Taurus got out of the car and fled. The victim was able to apprehend the driver, Quentin Alexander Griffin, 16, 3050 Broadpoint Drive, Harbour Heights. A search of the area was made by deputies, Traffic, K9 and the Aviation helicopter but failed to locate the other three teens.

Deputies said the teens reportedly bought eggs to throw at people. When they saw the victim’s oncoming truck, one of the teens threw something at it which smashed the windshield and damaged the truck. The victim, 25, a female passenger, 24, and a one year old baby girl, who live in Ridge Harbor east of Punta Gorda, were not injured. Deputies said the object that struck the truck was capable of causing great bodily harm, or possibly even death to the occupants.

Griffin was arrested for Principal in the First Degree of Throwing a Deadly Missile, a felony, and taken to the Charlotte County Jail. He was released Tuesday morning to the custody of his mother and given 21 days home detention.

Deputies are looking for the other three involved in the case.

No other details or names are being released at this time as the case is ongoing.

2-Headed Albino Snake
Born in Central Florida

RIDGE MANOR, Florida [NMT/WKMG] -- A rare, two-headed albino milk snake has been born in Central Florida, Orlando television WKMG reported.

University of Central Florida field biologist Daniel Parker said the egg was laid by an albino Honduran milk snake a few months ago, and he was shocked by what he found when he looked through the moss in the incubation container last week.

“I did a double take,” said Parker. “I couldn’t believe what I was looking at.”

According to a news release, Parker said most two-headed snakes have typical coloration, making the albino two-headed snake extremely rare.

“This might be the most beautiful two-headed snake that has ever existed,” Parker said.

Albino snakes are missing all dark pigmentation in their skin, and in milk snakes, that makes them appear in bright shades of red, orange and white, according to a news release.

“Two-headed snakes have been documented to live as long as 20 years in captivity,” says Parker. “With two different brains giving commands to one body, it must be a confusing existence. This snake certainly would not be able to survive in the wild.”

Parker also works as a guide for his wildlife tour company, Sunshine Serpents, WKMG said.

Man Arrested for Pointing Gun
at Sarasota Police Officer

SARASOTA, Florida [NMT] -- On October 27th at approximately 9:00 p.m., Officer Andrew Combs and Officer Michael Skinner were on foot patrol in the area of the Old Projects located in the 1900 block of N. Orange Avenue. The officers are assigned to the Sarasota Police Department’s Street Crimes Unit. The neighborhood the officers were patrolling is part of the Sarasota Housing Authority. The property is posted no trespassing, and law enforcement officers are requested to make contact with individuals on the property to ensure that they are residents, or visiting family / friends.

Michael Lawson

Officer Combs used his police radio to contact Officer Skinner. He advised that a male, walking on the housing authority property, observed the officer and then turned away walking in the opposite direction. Officer Skinner observed the same male, later identified as Michael B. Lawson. Officer Skinner identified himself as a police officer and asked the male for identification. Mr. Lawson did not show any identification, he asked the officer, “Why?” Officer Skinner asked if he was there visiting any family or friends; Lawson replied, “Why?” Lawson then ran from the officer.

Officer Skinner gave verbal commands to stop, however Lawson continue to flee. Officer Skinner deployed his taser, the deployment was not successful. Officer Skinner saw Lawson reach into Lawson’s waistband; the officer suspected he was going to try to throw away some narcotics. Instead Lawson turned towards the officer and pulled a black handgun from his waistband; Lawson pointed the handgun at Officer Skinner who was now within 10 feet of Lawson.

Officer Skinner abandoned the taser, and drew his department issued handgun. He ordered Lawson to get on the ground. Lawson turned, dropped the gun to the ground, and then continued to flee on foot.

Michael Lawson ran for about another 100 yards, with Officer Skinner pursuing him. Lawson then fell to the ground and was taken into custody by Officer Combs.

Officer Skinner recovered the gun that Lawson had dropped. It was a loaded black Berretta .22 with eight rounds in the magazine.

A teletype entry revealed that the gun had been reported stolen in 2009. In 2009, the Berretta had been inside a car that was stolen; when the stolen car was recovered the gun was missing and two bulletproof vests (that were not in the car at the time the vehicle was stolen) were recovered.

Officers transported Lawson to the Sarasota County Jail. Lawson told officers that he did not have any other illegal items on him. At the intake of the jail, a SSO corrections deputy, located two small baggies of marijuana in Lawson’s pocket.

Man Charged with Snapping
Picture Up Woman's Dress

HOLLY HILL, Florida [NMT/WKMG] -- A woman said she felt violated after seeing store surveillance video of a man sneaking behind her and taking pictures up her skirt at a Holly Hill Walmart, Orlando television station WKMG reported.

Police said late Tuesday that they have a person of interest in the case, and James Allen Risi, 30, was charged on Wednesday.

Police said Risi confessed, and said he snapped the picture in the spur of the moment.

Risi cannot be arrested on the charge, because video voyeurism is a misdemeanor on the same level as a traffic ticket. The only way someone can be arrested and jailed for the crime is if a law enforcement officer witnesses the crime.

"I felt exploited," said the victim, Sabrina Ortiz, who told Local 6 what happened to her could happen to anyone.

Sabrina Ortiz said was shopping at the Walmart at 1905 North Nova Road in Holly Hill on Oct. 12, when store cameras caught a man walking behind her, squatting, and reaching under her knee-length skirt with a camera.

Ortiz said she never knew anyone was even there, until another woman explained what happened. The witness described the man as being in his 40s, about 6 feet tall and 180 pounds. He was wearing a baseball hat, white shirt, dark shorts and flip-flops.

Since then, Ortiz will not shop alone. She worries what the man was doing before and after her case, WKMG said.
